8:30 AM Update from the Provost
Thursday, April 25
Dear students, faculty and staff:
Western Michigan University is experiencing an unprecedented computer network failure caused by equipment serviced by an outside vendor. The system outage prevented many students from taking online examinations and turning in assignments today, the last day for final exams.
We are asking faculty members to be flexible in administering their final assessments and to make reasonable accommodations for students affected by the outage.
Students hampered by this technical problem should not be penalized for not completing exams or submitting assignments during the outage, which began at 10 a.m. on April 25. The Office of the Registrar will be extending the deadline for grade submission. And access to OneDrive will be extended to allow graduating students to continue to manage their online portfolios.
Meanwhile, efforts to restore all network services continue. Systems requiring a login, such as Elearning, email and the GoWMU portal, may work for some users. But the network is still too slow to accommodate reliable connection.
Technicians have not yet determined when problems with network hardware will be fully resolved. But as new information becomes available, we will provide updates on this webpage as well as through text and on WMU Facebook and Twitter accounts.
When we experience difficulties such as this, it calls on administrators, faculty and staff to remember why we do what we do—to support student success. Thank you for creatively living that mission.
Jennifer Bott, Ph.D.
Provost and vice president for academic affairs
